THE GARDEN OF EDEN !

"The Garden of Eden is the original surveillance state. God creates the heavens and the earth, turns on the lights, inspects everything that he has made and, behold, finds it very good. But then the creation attempts to acquire the surveillant properties of the creator".

Boa leitura.

SÓ PARA ALGUNS,OS MELHORES!

"It owes an intentional debt to Pollock not only in its palette but in its application and process. Pollock was not a "chance operations" artist, but was very deliberate in his execution. His process was an admixture of chaos and craft, and part of that craft lay in how much chaos to allow into the work, when to allow it in, and how to allow it in. Similarly, Tarbell is not using Flash (as t. whid rightly observes), but Processing which compiles into Java, and then he's going behind and hand-tweaking the compiled java. The piece is generative, but not without Tarbell's particular, intentional visaul aesthetic, not just in the final output, but in the real-time "playing out" of the piece. Whereas Pollock's "hand" in real-time painting led to the production of a static final painting, Tarbell removes this process one step further. Tarbell's "hand" in real-time coding leads to the software's "hand" in real-time "painting," which in turn leads to the output of the static piece. I!
n Pollock's case, the final piece shows evidence of Pollock's energetic "performance," that is, his painting of the piece. In Tarbell's case, the performance (the software's "drawing" of the art) *is* the actual piece. This generative "playing out" in turn shows evindence of Tarbell's coding "performance" which occurs off stage, but which is nevertheless observable by viewing the intentionally open source code.

So it ain't just FlashFormalism. It's "speaking" about art history; about new media's relation to art history; about the nature of time-shiftedness and instruction giving; about the balance between chaos and control; about the continuum of performance, meta-performance (literally "script writing"), and object; about the relationship between process and visual aesthetics; about the relationship between code, hand, line, and dance; about the ability of software-based media to evince an idiosynchratic personal style. Plus it looks so danged pretty. And the beauty of it (literally) is, you don't have to grok the above insights to get something out of the piece".

A NIKE, O "GAMANÇO" E UMA CAMPANHA CORRECTA

"On the left is the cover for Minor Threat’s self-titled 1984 album, on the right is an ad for a new campaign by Nike Skateboarding. Spot the differences? There aren’t many".

"On the panels of the city, fragments of dialog are posted: a man follows a woman, she enters in a cabin.

On the public cabins of the city, the question “Who are you?” and a telephone number on which you can leave a message.

A few weeks later. In the street, ringing of a phone box which resounds in the vacuum, without destination.

A passer by approaches, intrigued. The cabin lights of a sharp light. The passer opens the door, enters, takes down the compound, a little constrained. After one moment he hears a voice, somebody says his name, tells his life, an anecdote, is described, his age, date of birth and other things still. Then the message stops, another voice requires: “Whoare you?”, there is a beep, hecan leave a message now… He speaks.

In an official building his voice is mixed with film extracts: a man is in a cabin, he composes a number or receives a call, the conspiracy must remain anonymous.

A little further the street lights again, palpitates, another cabin sounds, another passer by stops. Will he takes the responsability to answer this message which is not intended to him?"

Ficção ? Realidade !

SOFT CINEMA

"What kind of cinema is appropriate for the age of Google and blogging? Automatic surveillance and self-guided missiles? Consumer profiling and CNN? To investigate answers to this question Lev Manovich - one of today’s most influential thinkers in the fields of media arts and digital culture – has paired with award-winning new media artist and designer Andreas Kratky to create the Soft Cinema project. They have also invited contributions from leaders in other cultural fields: DJ Spooky, Scanner, George Lewis and Jóhann Jóhannsson (music), servo and Andreas Angelidakis (architecture), Schoenerwissen/Office for Computational Design (data visualization), and Ross Cooper Studios (media design)".

ALEXANDER SUTULO: A MONUMENTAL MURAL - THE HISTORY OF CHILEAN MINING

"Soon to be inaugurated in August, 2005 is a 3 story high (H: 12.4MT x W: 8.0MT) digital mural at the University of Concepción, Chile, where in an unprecedented manner; the artwork encompasses the history of Chilean mining from pre-Columbian period (c. 2.200 B.C.) to contemporary times. The author, visual artist Alexander Sutulov, based his iconographic study in a thesis of how early metallurgical activity in the Andean world where the oldest evidence of work in copper was Mina Perdida near Lima, Peru during the Initial Period (2.000 – 900 B.C.) had a direct impact in the development of Chile as one of the mayor mining countries in the world. Contrary to common knowledge where gold and silver is usually associated to pre-Columbian cultures, it was not until a more complex metallurgy developed with the use of copper and its alloys allowed pre-Colombian civilization unfold to its full dimension".

THE ERYK SALVAGGIO MUSEUM OF MODERN LIVING

"Every day, objects are discovered, created, or discarded, side effects of the human condition. The Eryk Salvaggio Museum of Modern Living seeks to document this debris; not as an art museum, but as a museum to the inadvertant, accidental documents we produce in the course of living our modern lives."

Urbanite is like nothing you have ever seen before. Free, like an alternative weekly, but four-color like a lifestyle magazine, Urbanite leads an emerging trend in media coverage that combines excellence in editorial and design with accessibility. Urbanite provides cultural coverage of Baltimore life for urbanites who take advantage of the vitality found in the city, whether they work, play or live there.
