NETLAG

"Pleix compiled images from 1609 outdoor live webcams around the world, recording one frame every 10 minutes during a 24-hour span in January 2004. The images were then arranged within a grid based on their geographical locations, and replayed, thus creating a global map composed of synchronized video. Camera zooms and pans navigate between the macro and micro views".

A VERNACULAR WEB - THE INDIGENOUS AND THE BARBARIANS

When I started to work on the World Wide Web I made a few nice things that were special, different and fresh. They were very different from what was on the web in the mid 90's.

I'll start with a statement like this, not to show off my contribution, but in order to stress that -- although I consider myself to be an early adopter -- I came late enough to enjoy and prosper from the "benefits of civilization". There was a pre-existing environment; a structural, visual and acoustic culture you could play around with, a culture you could break. There was a world of options and one of the options was to be different.

REMIX AND REMIXABILITY

"The dramatic increase in quantity of information greatly speeded up by
Internet has been accompanied by another fundamental development. Imagine
water running down a mountain. If the quantity of water keeps continuously
increasing, it will find numerous new paths and these paths will keep
getting wider. Something similar is happening as the amount of information
keeps growing - except these paths are also all connected to each other and
they go in all directions; up, down, sideways. Here are some of these new
paths which facilitate movement of information between people, listed in no
particular order: SMS, forward and redirect function in email clients,
mailing lists, Web links, RSS, blogs, social bookmarking, tagging,
publishing (as in publishing one¹s playlist on a web site), peer-to-peer
networks, Web services, Firewire, Bluetooth. These paths stimulate people to
draw information from all kinds of sources into their own space, remix and
make it available to others, as well as to collaborate or at least play on a
common information platform (Wikipedia, Flickr)".

TUG OF WAR OVER NET TAKES CENTER STAGE

"In a day when Internet access is critical to world commerce - let alone casual communication - even a five-day lapse is a hardship. And when one government needs another to let its citizens be visible again on that net, it can be a damaging blow to its own sovereignty, as well as perhaps a matter of national security, even if the cause was a dispute over payments, as in the Libyan case".

Começa amanhã, na Tunisia, o "World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

Ainda hoje, na formiga bargante, iremos colocar mais artigos sobre este tema, que passa ao lado na comunicação social portuguesa.

IS IT TIME FOR COPYRIGHT TO CHANGE ?

"This is going to sound counterintuitive, but Winnie the Pooh has a lot to tell us about the state of human intellectual endeavour. AA Milne created him in 1926, so he'll be 80 next year. But it won't be until his 100th birthday, in 2026, that the rights to the Pooh characters will finally slip from the grasp of the Disney Corporation, which has protected them fiercely since buying them in 1961".

WARHOL´S TIME MACHINE

"The artist's 612 cardboard boxes of junk offer a gateway to the past, the present, and maybe even the future".

"This is so twenty-first century, I think, walking across the Seventh Street Bridge in downtown Pittsburgh on a stupefyingly hot August afternoon. The bridge is one of three practically identical suspension spans built across the Allegheny River in the mid-1920s. Made of steel painted butter yellow, it's a beautiful and poetic expression of the city's industrial past. However, in March it was renamed the Andy Warhol Bridge after the city's most famous postindustrial son. Clamped onto the bridge's cables are a succession of square banners displaying Warhol's blank expression and announcing the new name. And so the bridge has become a strange hybrid of past, present, and future that seems to define this century thus far--a symbol of industrial might retrofitted into an emblem of third-millennium insouciance".

THE CRAFT OF THE WEB.ARTIST:SOME CONSIDERATIONS, POR REGINA CÉLIA PINTO

"Much has been said and debated about the craft of the web.artist, but I have never found a paper that organizes or establishes standards for that craft. Ever since I launched my project, “The Craft of the Web.Artist: Some animated considerations,” I have been trying to gather information on the subject. In a paper titled “The craft of the ethnographer, sociological method” (1902) [1], Mauss informs us that documents, witnesses and authentic facts abound, and that a scientist must be a good observer, separating the wheat from the chaff. This is what I have been trying to do, while using my personal experience as a guide. In this article, I will attempt to give a critical interpretation of what I’ve been feeling, reading and observing, in plain language".

WHEN THE WEATHER WAS BEAUTIFUL I TOUGHT IT WAS A WASTE OF TIME TO SIT IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER

" Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist with a background in science. For the last 15 years, he has been evolving a series of wind-powered animals, made of plastic tubes. When these constructions are fed by wind, they set into motion and transmute into organic-looking creatures; or beach-animals as Jansen calls them.
Theo Jansen received the Jury's Special Price in the Interactive Artistival 2005".

A METAMORFOSE DAS BANDEIRAS

"A collaborative / participatory art project - a continuously growing animation with many authors: The flags of every nation in the world will transform into each other in a flash animation.

A flag may blow in the wind but its appearance is long-established and changes far less frequently than does the land which it represents. Using digital media however, we can make the symbols dance".
